Last month’s beheading of Aasiya Hassan by her husband at the Muslim TV station in Buffalo New York does not represent Muslims nor the Bridges TV station. However, it does send a wrong message about Islam, especially when it’s common knowledge that many Muslim men ill-treat their wives due to cultural upbringing and ignorance. This incident should be an eye opener for husbands and wives to study the Qur’aan and Sunnah on the rights of a husband and wife in Islam. In the Holy Qur’aan chapter 4 verse 34, chapter 30 verse 21 and chapter 4 verse 128, Allaah says, that the husband should protect and care for his wife- marriage should be a means of peace, tranquility and love - if the purpose of marriage cannot be obtained by a husband and wife, then they should seek an amicable separation, rather than resulting to hate, domestic violence or murder as we have seen in the case with Aasiya at the Muslim TV station and so many other cases that are not known to the media. Due to limited space, I am not able to write in details, however, the Holy Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. said, “ The best among you, is he who is best to his family.” While marriage will have it’s good and bad days, it is important for Muslims to pay heed to the guide lines of the Qur’aan and Sunnah in dealing with a situation, rather than using anger and culture to solve matters. After Aasiya’s beheading, many Muslim organizations have denounced domestic violence but have failed to accept the fact that there are many ignorant and radical Muslims who have brought their culture to England and America and still do these acts of domestic violence . Similarly, most Muslim organizations condemn terrorism but fail to accept the fact that there are radical Muslims who propagate terrorism in the name of Islam, calling it ‘Holy Jihaad and Freedom Fighters’. Muslim leaders and organizations need to draw the line with people who use Islam to promote violence and hate for their own political/personal agenda. There is no need to play politics with radicals who misrepresent Islam - this is hurting Islam and would continue to hurt the Muslims worldwide.
